Prenatal depression isn't just feeling a little sad during pregnancy—it's a serious mood disorder that can really affect you - and possibly your baby. ⁣
⁣
👉 Here's what you need to know!⁣
 ⁣
Symptoms of Prenatal Depression:⁣
💙 Ongoing or extreme sadness⁣
💙 Anxiety⁣
💙 Fatigue⁣
💙 Trouble sleeping⁣
💙 Withdrawal from family and friends⁣
💙 Loss of interest in activities once enjoyed⁣
⁣
Risk Factors for Prenatal Depression:⁣
💙 Family history of anxiety disorders, panic disorder, or other mental illnesses⁣
⁣
💙 Personal history of mood disorders such as depression or postpartum depression⁣
⁣
👉Recognizing the signs is key. If you're experiencing symptoms, don't hesitate to seek evaluation from your healthcare provider. ⁣
⁣
They'll ask about when symptoms started and how often they occur, guiding you toward the right treatment options - including antidepressants for use during pregnancy.⁣
⁣
Remember, reaching out for help isn't a sign of weakness — it's incredibly brave.⁣
⁣
If you are struggling, know you are not alone and that there is help!

I have not dealt with prenatal depression personally myself, but I would LOVE for you to share your story of what helped you. Maybe you can help another mama who is struggling

🍼 Wooooo, we love a good milk supply! If you plan to breastfeed, listen up!

I tried this after my most recent birth, and I TRULY feel like it made all the difference in my supply!

There was a study in 2009 that consisted of 67 mothers of preterm infants (less than 31 weeks gestation) who were assigned to hand express for 5 minutes on each breast, 5 or more times per day, for the first 3 days postpartum - in ADDITION to maintaining a consistent pumping schedule (pumping 8-12 times in 24 hours).

Mean daily breastmilk volumes were 955 ml per day in mothers who hand expressed >5 per day in the first 3 days, compared to 820 ml for mamas who did not hand express! Yay milk!

This study was done on PRETERM mamas, because pump-dependent mothers of preterm infants commonly experience insufficient production.

Can it be applied to term deliveries to achieve higher milk supplies? DEFINITELY! Hand expression is a POWERFUL tool - and even if you’re unsuccessful in upping your supply, knowing how to hand express when you’re a breastfeeding mom is worth it’s weight in #liquidgold! (pun intended 😜)

So, let’s go over the 5-5-3:

✅ 5 minutes of hand expression (on each breast) - this can be done before or after feeding/pumping! I typically did it after!

✅ 5 or more times per day - well, we’re already feeding/pumping 8-12 times on average, so this isn’t too hard to commit to!

✅ 3 days - Only 3 days can make all the difference!

Are you going to try this after you give birth? Tag me and let me know how it goes!!

LOL 🤣

I've had my fair share of partners bringing video games in the L&D room 🤪

But sometimes mom plays too while she is in labor!! 🎮

I wanted to illustrate how crazy big your uterus stretches to accommodate baby! 🤭⁣⁣
⠀⠀⁣
Pre-pregnancy, a typical uterus measures about 3-4 inches by 2.5 inches, weighing about 2oz, and about the size of a small apple (or your fist). It’s actually more of pear shape too! 🍐

At 12 weeks pregnant your uterus will round out, reach the size of a grapefruit (as shown in the post!) ⁣⁣
⠀⠀⁣
At term, your uterus has stretched to accommodate between 2L-5L (depending on how big baby is and if you have multiples), and weighs approximately 2lbs (on it’s own, not including baby/placenta) 😳

Did you know this?!⁣⁣

❤️ If you’re trying to go unmedicated for your birth, SAVE THIS POST!

🐴 Horse lips: This was one of the ONLY pain relief techniques I could do in transition with my last baby! This helps relax your jaw, which will help relax your pelvis and allow labor to progress.
🕺 Frequent position changes: Switching things up can help decrease pain perception and promote labor progression!
🧸 Ragdoll: I want you to think about a ragdoll and mimic what she looks like. It’s harder than it sounds, but relaxing during those contractions is SO key to progression!

Veteran moms, what else helped you with the pain? 👇
