This week on The Mommy Labor Nurse Podcast I’m interviewing Daphne Delvaux who is also known as the Mamattorney!! Daphne is a practicing attorney with her own law firm that specializes in gender discrimination cases and helping women at work.

Her platform, the Mamattorney aims to empower and inspire women to become educated about their rights at work so that they can embrace their motherhood journey without compromising their career growth.

You may have caught my Instagram Live with her I did back in March – and as soon as we connected I KNEW I had to have her come on the podcast as well to deep dive into the topics of pregnancy rights in the workplace and maternity leave laws. Lucky for all of us, she was totally on board!!

Inside of today’s episode, you’ll hear Daphne answer questions related to pregnancy discrimination, pregnancy accommodations in the workplace, and how to address issues that may come up. Then we shift into talking about all things maternity leave including your federal rights, tips and tricks to get some protected leave, even if your job doesn’t qualify for FMLA, how you might be able to extend your leave, and more!

After you finish, you can continue learning about preparing for postpartum in Episode 167, and also check out Episode 136: Preparing Your Relationship for Baby with Dr. Tracy.

Questions inside the episode

  • What is the high level law surrounding pregnancy discrimination in the workplace?
  • What are some common ways you see this violated in your practice? Can we give some anecdotal examples here hat people can identify with?
  • What about pregnancy accommodations at work? How are women protected and how can they get their needs met?
  • Can we talk about prenatal appointments in the workday? Are those protected by law, or how can they be?
  • What should women do if they are experiencing discrimination? Where can they turn for help?
  • Can you give us an overview of FMLA?
  • How can mamas potentially extend their leave?
  • What if your job doesn’t qualify you for leave rights? Are there any workarounds to some job-protected leave?
  • Can we talk about when companies think their “company policy” is the end all be all?
  • Where is the best place for women to get educated about their state-level rights? Too often companies are not well-versed
  • When should women start coordinating their maternity leave?
  • Where can women turn for help if they are facing pushback or having difficulty interpreting the laws?
  • Where can we learn more from you Daphne? Where do you hang out and what services, content, and education do you provide?
