1. Get Moving, Mama!
I know that couch might look extra comfy in pregnancy, trust me I’ve been there! Some form of movement or gentle exercise can be a total game-changer in pregnancy though.
Aim for at least 30 minutes of moderate activity most days. Think brisk walks, prenatal yoga, swimming, or even just dancing around the house to your favorite tunes!
Exercise can boost your mood, improve your sleep, help you maintain a healthy weight, and even ease those pesky pregnancy aches and pains.
2. Fuel Your Body
Eating for two doesn’t necessarily mean eating twice as much. Instead of focusing on the quantity, focus on the quality. This means choosing foods that nourish both you, mama, and your little one! Focus on foods like fruits, veggies, lean proteins, and whole grains.
Don’t forget to stay hydrated too! A good rule of thumb is to keep a water bottle handy and sip throughout the day. Aim to drink enough water throughout the day to keep your urine pale yellow or clear in color.
Depending on your activity level, the season, and the climate where you live, this might vary, but try to drink about 10-ish glasses of water a day.
Don’t forget your mental health too! Your mental health is such an important part of your overall health but all too often it gets neglected.
Pregnancy is exciting but can also be exhausting and stressful. Don’t forget to do things that allow you to rest and relax, mama!
3. Catch Those Zzz’s (when you can)
Growing a tiny human is exhausting! It’s normal to feel tired during pregnancy, especially in the first and third trimesters. I know that it’s easier said than done, especially during pregnancy, but aim for 7-9 hours of quality sleep each night.
If you can squeeze in a nap during the day, go for it! A well-rested mama is a happy mama!
4. Take Time to Bond with Baby (while still in your belly)
Even before your little one arrives, start building a connection. You and your partner can talk to your baby, sing to your baby, and read to your baby. This helps you feel closer to your baby and can even make labor & delivery and postpartum easier.
What’s more, research suggests that newborns can recognize voices they consistently hear while in the womb. There’s no such thing as talking, singing, and reading to your baby too much.
5. Take a Chill Pill (metaphorically speaking!)
Stress is a normal part of life. Unfortunately, stress doesn’t magically disappear or improve in pregnancy (although it really should!).
It’s important very important to manage it. Find what helps you relax and unwind. Maybe it’s meditation, deep breathing exercises, listening to calming music, going on a walk, or taking a warm bath! You’ve gotta take care of you, mama!
6. Kegels, Kegels, Kegels!
These simple exercises strengthen your pelvic floor muscles, which support your bladder, uterus, and rectum. Doing kegels regularly during pregnancy can be a total game-changer!
They can help prevent incontinence, improve bladder control, and even make for a smoother delivery and postpartum recovery. Aim for three sets of 10-15 repetitions each day.
