This week on The Mommy Labor Nurse Podcast I’m joined by my friend and home birth midwife, Anne Margolis, from Home Sweet Homebirth! Yeah, we’re chatting all about home birth this week!
Home birth is something I am NOT very familiar with, from a practitioner standpoint – I’ve only EVER attended hospital births – but I do respect that some women choose home birth as an alternative to birthing in a traditional hospital setting.
Because of this, I thought it would be really educational (and fun!) to have a home birth midwife on the podcast to talk to us about some of her experiences and answer some of my questions about home birth! Anne has been in practice for over 25 years as a midwife, so she’s really seen it all!
Today we talked about home birth prenatal care, water births, hospital transfers, and so much more! You guys are going to love Anne and all she has to say in this episode!
What we talked about surrounding home birth:
- Tell me about yourself, how long have you been in practice, how many births have you attended. What are your training credentials? Were you a nurse before becoming a midwife? What inspired you to become a midwife?
- What is prenatal care like? Do you come to your patient’s houses?
- How does someone contact you during labor? Do they go into your office to get checked out first? When do you know to go to their house?
- Talk to us about water births!
- Talk to us about pain relief measures and some of the most common tools that you use
- Do you have a nurse who is assisting you with births, or do you attend them yourself? Do you work with other midwives if you were sick or traveling?
- What is your policy with transferring to the hospital? What is your transfer rate? What sort of instances would you transfer someone out of your care?
- Do you attend VBACs, multiple births, or breech births?
- What does newborn care look like after delivery?

About Anne Margolis
I’m a mother of four and a third-generation childbirth practitioner. I’m a holistic certified nurse-midwife who has delivered over a thousand healthy babies to happy mothers during home births and in hospital settings. I’ve run a successful private practice in upstate New York for years, and I’ve been the head midwife at various hospitals.
A big part of my holistic approach comes from the healing I’ve experienced firsthand from breathwork and yoga, which is why I became a certified instructor in both. I love helping moms and moms-to-be find wellness through breath, movement, and nutrition.
I know what it’s like to give birth using both conventional and alternative methods, and I want women to know that it is absolutely possible to have an amazing experience no matter what they choose. Whether you go natural, need medicine, or require interventions, I’ll meet you right where you are to guide you towards an epic, empowering experience you will cherish for a lifetime.
